Welcome to the Project on Child Development!

For over 10 years, we have examined language and cognitive development in infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.  Our studies take place in a comfortable, home-like setting at Northwestern University 's Evanston campus.  Parents participate with their children in a single, brief play session.  During this play session, which usually lasts about 15 minutes, we give the child a series of different pictures or toys and simply note how long the child plays with and/or looks at each and which he/she chooses based on the questions we ask.  Parking is free and children receive a small gift to take home with them.  Parents enjoy the opportunity to play with their child and observe the session in our relaxed environment.

We hope that you will join us in our efforts to find out what infants and young children think!  If you are interested in participating, or in receiving more information, please call us at (847) 491-3316.  Because our research usually involves children at particular ages, it may be several months until we are ready to call you for a study.  When your child reaches an age we are studying, we will contact you to describe the play session more fully and to see if you are interested in participating.  In the meantime, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to call us.  We would be delighted to speak to you.  ;-)
